November 2024 Product Highlights: Smarter and Easier

At TRM, we’re committed to empowering investigators with products and resources to efficiently find actionable intelligence. In November, our updates ranged from advanced tracing capabilities to streamlined exposure analysis and updated certifications.

Here’s a look at some of what’s new at TRM Labs.

Advanced UTXO tracing mode

UTXO transactions, with their complex web of inputs and outputs, have long posed unique challenges for blockchain investigators. That’s why we’re excited to introduce TRM’s UTXO tracing mode, a solution designed to simplify this complexity by consolidating all critical information directly within the graph. No more switching between panels or tabs—everything you need is in one place. Investigators can also seamlessly toggle between cluster-level and address-level tracing, offering unparalleled flexibility in their workflow.

Enabling UTXO tracing mode is straightforward. With a simple toggle, the graph displays enhanced address and transaction properties, empowering investigators to identify linked addresses and transactions without relying on external block explorers. This streamlined approach not only saves time but also ensures investigations remain focused and efficient.

Earlier this year, we introduced third-generation blockchain intelligence with Transfer Labels, a groundbreaking dataset that contextualizes on-chain transactions. For UTXO chains, this dataset includes labeling the change address — essential for following the money. The new UTXO tracing mode allows investigators to validate the fund flows for legal process, resulting in clarity and control over every investigate decision.

With TRM’s UTXO tracing mode, insights are displayed where you need them most—right on the graph. No tabs, no toggling, just seamless, efficient investigations.

Updated TRM Certified Investigator certification

We’re excited to announce the relaunch of the TRM Certified Investigator (TRM-CI). This flagship certification equips learners with the latest in crypto intelligence and investigative techniques, including UTXO and account-based tracing, illicit activity analysis, fund tracing, wallet reconstruction, and open-source intelligence connections to conduct effective on-chain investigations across multiple blockchains.

Improved modules include:

  • UTXO tracing and clustering to accurately trace transactions across multiple hops
  • Account-based tracing methodologies with unique approaches for investigating account-based systems
  • Illicit on-chain activity deep dive to understand the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used by bad actors
  • Refreshed certification exam with updates aligned to the latest investigative practices
  • Real-world practicals to refine your skills

Options for every investigator:

  • New learners: Gain comprehensive knowledge to tackle crypto investigations with confidence
  • Returning certified investigators: Recertify at a discounted rate and stay ahead of emerging trends

Enhanced scam victim support through Chainabuse

Did you know that TRM operates Chainabuse.com, the largest reporting platform for victims of crypto scams and fraud? The platform has received approximately 715,000 reports — a staggering and heartbreaking number. In an effort to help, victims gain access to free guidance and support focused on three critical areas after submitting a report:

  • Preventative education to recognize and avoid scams
  • Advice on steps to take if scammed
  • Information on how the recovery of funds works

That last point is crucial. Many victims, in their distress, unknowingly fall prey to asset recovery scammers while seeking resolution. Whereas by reporting through Chainabuse, law enforcement using TRM are able to investigate reports.

In November, we enhanced the resources provided to victims immediately after they submit a report, ensuring they receive time-sensitive guidance. For more comprehensive support, victims can also visit the Chainabuse Safety Support Center to access additional tools and educational materials.

Updates to make exposure analysis easier

In September, we announced that TRM became the first to offer automatic cross-chain indirect exposure. Later that month, we shared a detailed example of using on-chain exposure analysis alongside community reports from Chainabuse to identify additional victims and potential cash-out points. These examples demonstrate the critical role exposure analysis plays in effective blockchain investigations.

We recently introduced several updates to make our exposure analysis tools easier to navigate and use, ensuring a smoother experience for investigators.
